Crush the Social Media Game for Good with a New Mentality

Author

Oscar Wilde once said, “Life is too important to be taken seriously.”

Kudos to Wilde, because 80+ years is a l-o-n-g time to be in your head. Whether it’s your personal life, goals you’ve set, or business, the truth is that most of us spend so much time focusing on growth, achievements, and success, and too little time enjoying the ride.

When it comes to your social media business pages—no matter how much you may have convinced yourself that you’re no good at the social media game—a little bit of humor goes a long way. Yes, your followers are expecting updates, special offers, and other posts pertaining to your business, but you know what will keep them engaged?

Humor. Story. Your personality (because, believe it or not, the world of business doesn’t have to be robotic).

Get out of your head and out of your own way when it comes to slaying at social media. Easier said than done? Don’t worry—we’re here to show you how.

Your business page: An opportunity for community

Part of the reason you’re not a fan of social media is because you tell yourself the following:

  • I’m a business owner, not a publicist.
  • I’m too “old” to master the social media sphere—it’s dominated by Millennials and Gen Z!
  • I’m not a “Keeping up with the Joneses” type to begin with. Now I’m forced to play the social game to stay relevant?

If any of this sounds like the inside of your head, then stop. Rewind. Erase. Toss out all of your preconceived notions about social media and online promotion. Replace them all with one simple idea: your business page is an opportunity for community. And what does a community do?

They share things, of course!

Even if you’re a somewhat private person, connecting with others is one of the primary motivations of human life. We are hardwired to establish meaningful connections and interact with others!

Even if you don’t love the idea of posting to stay relevant, or maintaining your page to compete with similar businesses, think of your business’s social media page(s) as a way to establish a stronger sense of community, either in the online sphere or in your own town.

Enjoy your audience, and let them enjoy you!

Now comes the second piece of this puzzle: enjoy your posts. Think of everything you share as an extension of you, or an extension of your personality!

You might not be used to this approach, but believe it or not, not everything you post has to pertain to business. In fact, adding personal touches and getting silly with your followers can do a lot to enhance engagement, interaction, and interest in your brand.

Yes, your product or service is undoubtedly great, but what will attract and keep your audience interested in your business are all the little things that make you stand out from the crowd. If you establish yourself as a valued member of your community, you will always be successful in maintaining existing customers and drawing new ones.

So, what have we learned today? For starters, your followers and online audience are your community, and you and your business sit at the center. As the community hub, don’t be afraid to make it a warm place to be! Let your humor and your personality shine through. Social media will feel like less of a chore, and your audience will feel like there’s a real person behind your business.

It’s a win/win, as far as we’re concerned!
